She quietly mused to herself. She had always been too shy to talk to anyone, especially the boys. It wasn’t entirely because some of them were the best-looking boys she had ever seen, but it went with the fact that she was simply...shy. She always had been. Boldness seemed to dissolve with puberty; as oxymoronic as it seemed, it was the case. Her shyness had ruined so many opportunities for her…

As the assumption went, the quietest people have the loudest minds. This was true; because she never talked to anyone, she often sat alone and observed their behaviour. She had her own thoughts about everyone, the boys, the girls, even the higher-ups.

Jean, for example. Pompous, stubborn, but smart. There was no doubt he would make it into the top ten and rise like a star, but the brunette was so cocky about it sometimes. He could excel in hand-to-hand, when he wanted to. He would fit in with the MPs like a puzzle piece, as far as she understood. The MPs were simply a group of people who relaxed behind the walls and kissed up to the king. Jean could do that without fail.

That was how she analyzed others. She took their words and actions seriously, she pieced them together and she thought to herself whether or not she would associate with them, had she a voice.

She could be Jean’s friend. She could tell he wasn’t as asinine as he appeared.

The girl also took a liking to Anniw Leonhardt. She was sassy and smart, and she lived up to any threat she made. but she was also kind, though sort of on the down-low. She once gave the girl a tip on how to stand up to the boys without even touching them.

Hold your head high, your shoulders back, and stare them down. They hate that.

Annie was a woman that wouldn’t set herself on fire to keep anyone warm who didn’t deserve it. She was after her goal and nothing would stop her.

But with Annie came two boys; Bertholdt and Reiner.

As much as she wanted to be Annie’s official friend, she couldn’t bring herself to.

These boys were nice, they often laughed and made jokes (especially Reiner, who finds himself to be hilarious). Bertholdt was shy and nervous, it was rare to catch him without a bead of sweat clinging to his face. He often said hello to her, one of the only ones who did. Even if that ‘hello’ was just a small smile.

Bertholdt was cute. He was a good friend. even if they weren’t actually friends. He wasn’t the problem.

       It was Reiner.

Reiner was a problem in one of the best ways possible. He was caring; he took Armin’s weight to get him to speed up in one of the first training sessions they’d ever had. He was strong, he could easily carry a comrade that was injured and get them to safety. He was intelligent, a natural leader, and brave. (He was also very handsome.) These attributes, whenever she thought about them, made her heart speed up, as if wanting to be freed from the cage of ribs that concealed it.

At first, she thought she just admired him for these qualities. He was very admirable, very kind, and he was funny. But, she couldn’t talk to him. She couldn’t, she was physically unable to utter words to him.

She could say things to everyone else, had she a lead to do s, but Reiner. No words would come, the tall blonde must find her to be mute. All she could do was nod or smile bashfully at him, even when he addressed her. When she tried to push words out, they caught in her throat.

How foolish she felt, how schoolgirlish of her. The crush she had grew the more she found herself to be around him. They were even put together or near each other on duties sometimes. When he took his natural lead and asked something of her, all she could do was nod. Not verify with a strong “Yes!” or a variation of the word. No...she simply denied him vocal assurance against her will and did what was asked of her, because she trusted him.

That was another thing. He was so trustable, so reliable.

On one particular mission, she had a gear malfunction. Nothing serious, but of course Reiner went to help her. He slowed himself to make sure she was on her feet again. The intense blush must have passed as something else to him, for he seemed not to notice. He simply took care of her, carrying her in his arms to HQ and patched her up there.

She was so grateful to him, but she couldn’t even say a thank you. She had been too choked up, and she was so frustrated with herself.

“Why can’t you talk?!” She scolded herself, alone as her bunkmates were out. “Imagine how stupid you look! You’re a soldier, you aren’t some lover-girl!”

Her name was uttered from the door, slightly ajar as golden eyes peeked in to check on her.

Heat burned her cheeks as she realized it was him, gauze in his hands, as he wanted to patch her up a little more. They weren’t in the field now. He could do it effectively.

“Are you okay…?” He asked, still behind the door, “Should I leave?”

She shook her head, but it throbbed, as she had hit it against the tree. Her hands went up to hold it, her voice coming out as a soft cry of pain.

He was from behind that door instantaneously, and he knelt by her side.

How had she gotten to the floor? Her head pulsed again as she couldn’t remember.

He prefaced his words with a soft sigh of her name, “You have to use your words. You can speak, I just heard you.” He honestly didn’t know if she could or not, he had never heard her voice until the moment he heard her scolding herself.

“You can’t rely on body language in this state.” He murmured, “You hit that tree pretty hard, and you’re banged up real bad. Just talk to me…” He sighed, “Why won’t you talk to me…?”

The gauze wrapped around her relocated shoulder as his words echoed in her head. “Why won’t you talk to me…”

Inhalation through her nostrils, she breathed out words. “I’m afraid you’ll take me as a fool.”

Her first sentence to him, and it was that. Something that could never be true. He passed the sadness off with a smile, though his eyes and thin brows cast a look of depression. “What are you talking about? I’ve known you for three years...how could you seem like a fool?”

“I...I can’t...I’m…” There it was. The stuttering, the babbling she was afraid of. “I just didn’t want to sound…stupid. I didn’t want to tremble like I am now, I didn’t want you to think I’m j-just...I don’t know!” Why were her eyes welling with tears? Why did her stomach hurt?

He breathed her name in surprise, his eyes wide. “Why are you so afraid of me…?”

“I’m not!” She was so frustrated, “I’m not afraid of you…”

“Then why haven’t you uttered a word to me in three years?”

“Because…” Some of the constricted tears freed themselves. She was entirely too emotional. What she was afraid of was happening, all at once. “Because I...love you.”

There was a pang in his chest. His hands froze, gauze gripped in both of them as his stare was focused on the gash he was covering, the ripped skin of her forearm. To her, it was as though her words had frozen time, and she couldn’t stop crying.

“Please, Reiner, say something…” How ironic.

Despite her plea, he said nothing. He finished his work on her arm, but continued to stare at it.

She was shaking with sobs, silent ones, save for the pathetic little whimpers and gasps for air. This was horrible. This was the absolute worst case scenario she hadn’t thought of, as she had imagined what talking to Reiner for the first time would be like.

“Don’t cry.” He said, eyes still low. “Please,” He begged of her, “stop crying.”

She tried to silence her sniffling, bringing her hand up to wipe away her tears. Her elbow cracked and she yelped in pain, he grabbed her wrist.

“Stop it.” He said, shaking his head, “I told you not to move. Just relax. Don’t hurt yourself.”

        “I’m sorry…”

        “What are you apologizing for?”

“I should have said something. I’m sorry for being pathetic. And for never saying thank you. And for never speaking. I’m just so sorry…”

He kissed her. His lips pressed firmly to hers, his hand coming gently up to her jaw to tip her face upward.

She was frozen with shock, her face still wet and her eyes still red. One hand was still holding onto her wrist, his long fingers slid up and locked into hers, holding her hand delicately, but firmly.

Finally, she relaxed, moving her lips against his, kissing him as tenderly as he kissed her. She didn’t move her body, aside from leaning into him more, feeling more of his warmth, closer to his chest. She felt like he and she had been the best of friends forever, and they were finally having a moment.

The tenderness of his lips had gone as he took his face away from hers, though remaining close. He touched noses with her, smiling as she smiled back.

“I love you, too.” He promised, “Please...don’t ever be afraid of me…”

        “I won’t be. I never will be.”

“I hope you mean that…” He looked away for a moment, sighing.

She nuzzled him a little. “I do.”

His eyes met hers again. “Let’s finish this, I don’t want any of your wounds to get infected. That, and you need to get some sleep and some medicine. You’ll be feeling better, come morning, if you do.”

        “Thank you, Reiner.”

“It’s no problem. I just want you to be alright.”

“No, I meant thank you for everything. Every thank you I owe you.”

He smiled at her, kissing her lips softly and quickly, before nodding. “I know.”

Her heart felt so light. Now that she had been honest, now that she had spoken and let her shyness go, she felt free. She was no longer captive to her fears. Reiner made her feel so free.

And she would never let shyness rule her life again.
